American Plum
Order pick up: PICK UP FROM THE SWCD OFFICE ASAP - MONDAY-FRIDAY 8-4:30
American Plum (Prunus americana)
Tree size: S
Mature height: 15-25 ft
Mature spread: 15-25 ft
Estimated height range at delivery: 4-5 ft
Bloom time: March-April
Sun: Full sun-part shade
Soil moisture: Dry - Medium
Notes: Easily grown in average, dry to medium, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Remove suckers to prevent unwanted spread. This species is usually grown for ornamental value and not for fruit production, however. Although the plums can be eaten raw, the quality is somewhat poor. The fruits are perhaps better used for preserves and jellies.
Remember to consider above and below ground utilities and mature growth size when choosing trees for your property. Need more info on trees, pests, & growing characteristics? Visit www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/plantfinder.
We guarantee a healthy specimen will be supplied at pick up. Due to variations in planting, site conditions and care, no guarantee or refunds will be given after tree pick up. For three-gallon specimens, you are investing in quality root stock vs vigorous above ground leafing or height. From strong roots grow strong trees! The provided estimated heights at delivery are not guaranteed.
* Trees with an asterisk are noted in the Purdue Indiana Climate Change Impacts Assessment as good choices for urban areas in relation to climate change and foreseen shifting vegetation habitats. More info/links are on the tree sale webpage.
